Saw Serenity, really liked it.
Had to chuckle at one point because I recognized a filming location.

This was part of a city, and for filming they added a few set elements to look futuristic and technological.
In reality, this is a high school in California near Pomona. It was designed by a well known firm called Morphosis, headed by Thom Mayne. I saw him lecture once, it was really cool.

I guess that means you're
probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You
realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons'
philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most
other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer.

Your sense of humor takes the most thought to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my opinion.

You probably loved the Office.
kinda busy in studio this week. had a model due wednesday that took nearly an all-nighter on tuesday night to do, and I just finished work on a drawing/photoshop editing to stage the design as an occupied space and such. also had to do a quick write-up on the ideas at work in my design, blah blah blah. had to get up kinda early to finish all of that this morning. and now I have class in half hour. but it's ok, cause after class I'm heading to WYSIWYG for some computer gaming and Austin's birthdayness.
New York in less than a week, we've gone over the itinerary and a lot of it is stuff I've already seen but we are also going to visit about four architecture firms in Manhattan and I am rather interested about that. need to get that sort of image in mind to stay focused, I think (eyes on the prize, and so on). damn, I really want to graduate.

anyhoo, that's what's going on. note to self: work on assembling halloween costume after I get back from the trip. anyone know where Goodwill is so I can go search for stuff?

At Least I Dont Have Cabin Fever

All this hurricane activity has kept me inside all day.
For most of the day there has been no cable internet (although the tv still functioned). Mostly read a book today, played some console gaming.

The highlights for today have to have been
1)the water seepage that has gotten through a bit of the brickwork and down at the floor level
2)the tree that fell against my apartment building outside my window. I dont know how much damage that did to the roof over the second floor, but at least the main structure probably isnt severely damaged. Luckily the tree stood close to the building, so it didnt get a lot of momentum from the short fall.

Need to check on my family in the morning to see how it went down there.

Surveyor's Gaze

And a week goes by...

well, first some of the rundown on classes:
Design studio will be no less challenging than usual. In fact, somewhat moreso, because I have Prof. Gundersen. From having him for Design 2, I know that he is not easy, but he is quite good as a teacher. I have hope this will help me be more motivated and I can get back to my best or at least something manageable. I knew the curriculum was being restructured starting with the year that was formerly behind me, but I was a bit taken aback on Monday to find that now D7 takes the New York City trip, and so I had to shell out over 700 bucks on Friday to pay for transportation and accomodations. Well, at least I'll enjoy being back there, and since the trip is from September 23-29, there is no way I can end up in NYC's biggest blizzard in most of a century (like when I was there during February of '03).
I also have Environmental Technology 2, another ARC class that covers nuts and bolts such as acoustics and lighting. The professor just came back from a couple years of teaching hiatus and from what I hear, he is a whiz at the material but it will be a tough class. Gotta keep myself alert during the three hour lecture block on Monday evening the class is slotted in.
Arch. Theory 2 is being taught by my least favorite teacher, so I dont want to discuss that much further.

So far the living situation is working out pretty well. I had received a decent first impression of Nina when meeting her during summer break, but wasnt largely sure how things might go. I dont have any significant misgivings so far, and am feeling a bit optimistic. As for my stuff, I still have to unpack a couple boxes to get fully settled and I need to get a bunch of architecture stuff moved over to studio. Nonetheless, books are on the shelves, posters on the wall, music on the stereo and I was even jamming on my guitar a bit earlier.

Been killing some time with Diablo 2 and reading a couple things. Gonna plow through the rest of Card's Ender series again as soon as I get my hands on Speaker For the Dead.
A few days ago I finished reading a graphic novel that Austin has called Watchmen. It was done in the mid-80's by a couple guys who worked (perhaps still do?) with DC Comics. The writer, Alan Moore, also did the graphic novel From Hell. Anyhow, I'd highly recommend reading Watchmen - it definitely can be considered a piece of literature.

well, I'm plowing through my last week of work, trying to have fun with it. I think I'll actually miss it kinda. On Monday my whole family came to the Magic Kingdom to see me, so they got pictures and video of Baloo. We met up in the park after my shift was over and had dinner. I think I'll make a post soon with assorted observations on what work was like and tourists.

Anyhow, I'll be back in Gainesville on Sunday. I'll probably spend most of the day unpacking my stuff, putting things back together and so on. And then it will be school time...

Well, I took care of moving while in Gainesville on Friday and Saturday. Now I live at Williamsburg Village down near Shands at UF. Had a busy couple of days, was glad the hurricane veered away from Gville. My family (near Orlando) weathered through safely with nothing worse than loss of power for 12 hours. Yay. Saturday night I had to go to a friend's wedding, and then got on the road right after to head back home. Then I had to get up for work extra early since they wanted to know sooner who would be in to work. Tired, took a nap for a couple hours this afternoon. This is my last week of work. I'll be returning to Gville in a little more than a week, get settled proper in my apartment and prep for school...

And oh yeah, apparently Hero is going to be released in theaters sometime soon. W00t.

well, not many guesses hazarded towards my last post.
Austin had 1 correct answer, an anonymous poster had 2 answers. He was right about #13 being false (just by taking the 50/50 between it and the broken bones statement).
Anonymous (forget to log in? I have a couple guesses on the identity, both female) got 4 and 9 correct.

1. I didn't find a love for dancing until after getting into DDR.
By this I meant that I wasnt interested in dancing myself (although theatrically I did still appreciate dance performance to some extent, Christina). For one, I hadnt yet developed my sense of moving to rhythm.
2. I'm going to soon be starting my 6th year of college.
yep, I'm old. change of majors and other stuff has pushed me back. I'll even be graduating at the same time my sister Charlene (2 years younger) gets out of William and Mary and Katie graduates high school
3. I used to believe in God.
it's how I was raised, at least from my dad's influence, but I eventually made my own decisions
4. I'm dyslexic.
nope, completely off in left field. figured it would be a good lie. I've never once claimed to be slysdexic ;)
5. I often think that I don't have anything interesting to say.
::shrug::
6. I hate bananas.
blech, I dont like the smell or the taste and I hate the texture. Nature's perfect packaging couldnt win me over.
7. The person who can piss me off most easily is my little sister Katie.
part of being a sibling. Charlene and I dont get along with her nearly as well as with each other, which I suspect is largely due to the age gap.
8. IMO, there is no other band or musician before Frank Zappa.
perhaps some other time I'll have a big discourse on why I think he is so great, but not now.
9. As a young child, my dream was to become an astronaut.
The second falsehood. sure I thought outer space was cool and stuff, and I'm a SF buff, but I was more of a dinosaur lover, so I knew how to spell paleontologist when I was 6 years old.
10. While playing soccer in high school, I was one of the most agressive players on the varsity team.
Thought this might throw some people off, since it is contrary to my usual demeanor. I didnt go out there to hurt people, but I would get into the action and not be afraid to physically check guys even if they were bigger. Some of that can be seen in my kendo these days.
11. Alex is not my first name.
A lot of you guys know this, I am indeed Arthur Alexander Smith
12. I once had the crazy notion to start teaching myself to speak Esperanto.
I think it was around early high school, I read Phillip Jose Farmer's Riverworld series, and if you know about those books, you know that Esperanto catches on among the population as a language to bridge all the different cultures. I asked my dad about this Esperanto thing, and he told me about it being a real language that was invented with the intent to serve as a simple international language. It sounded pretty neat so I read up on it some. Figuring that I'd never meet anyone I could speak it with persuaded me to not actually learn the language (though it utilizes a lot of romance language influence). A couple years ago I wrote a term paper focused on Esperanto for a linguistics class.
13. I've never had a cavity.
My third lie. I was doing so well, cavity-free up until my last dentist appointment. They found a very small one and filled it in July (didnt even have to use amalgam so it isnt readily visible).
14. I've never broken a bone.
Lucky me. I've had to be stitched up several times tho.
15. Vonnegut is my second favorite author.
He is a close second behind my favorite, Robert A. Heinlein. I knew this might throw one or two people since I have even qouted Vonnegut at length in my LJ. Perhaps he would be my favorite, if he had gotten to me before Heinlein, who took me many places, excited and made me laugh, and even helped teach me how to think. Still, I love Vonnegut's edge and cynical humor, as well as his incredible perspectives on the human condition. Despite his cynicism, he is even sentimental - a literary critic once said that "Mr. Vonnegut puts bitter coatings on very sweet pills."
15 statements about me, 3 are false, so try to guess the bogus claims:

1. I didn't find a love for dancing until after getting into DDR.
2. I'm going to soon be starting my 6th year of college.
3. I used to believe in God.
4. I'm dyslexic.
5.
A rather barren post

busy as usual. Today was in at 07:30, out at 20:30, even longer tomorrow.
Picked up paycheck today, 54hrs, 16 of which was 1.5 OT. Not bad.
had two days off in a row this weekend (for the first time since started working). went to gainesville, took care of leasing a new apartment, much relief. got great deal for 3BR apartment, will be rooming with Austin and Nina (friend of his).
Got to be back in Gainesville on the 13th and 14th to move and go to a friend's wedding. After that I'll have about one more week of work and then will head back to Gainesville a little before the semester starts.

now off to bed.

My computer

well, it's repaired now
THE PROS: I'm using it to get on the internet now and I assume the replacement CD/DVD drive will burn properly and read everything

THE CONS: They reformatted my harddrive to ditch the corrupted OS which apparently was creating the internet problem. I didnt have much in the way of back-ups, so I've lost many gigabytes of music and video stuff and all video game save files that I had and so on...sigh, nothing absolutely vital was lost but it'll take a while to replace it all.

um, guess I should update once in a while. I have a day off today, so I'm busy doing nothing. My computer should be fixed by about now, so if CompUSA Service doesnt call me within a couple days I'll ring them up to see what the delay is. I sure am glad I got a two year warranty for it, since it was more than paid for by the motherboard replacement a few months ago.

Last Saturday I went to Busch Gardens with family. We had a good time, found something for everyone. My mom hates rollercoasters, she didnt go on any of those, but Katie, Dad and I went on all of them. We got there fairly early and went for Gwazi (the wooden coaster with two separate tracks). Good way to kick off the day. I kinda wish we had bought the picture from that ride, because it looked great - my sister's mouth and eyes were wide open and I had this maniacal grin on. That's part of how I know I love rollercoasters - they make me grin like crazy, which is something I never do normally. My favorite at the park was Kumba, although I might change my mind if I ever get to ride in the very front of Montu. Montu is one of those inverted track designs, with the passengers hanging under the track. Having your legs dangle is cool, but all the seats hanging in front of you cuts down your view. Imagine front row at night, cant see the track for most of the ride...yeah that'd be sweet. Anyhow, we also went on a couple water rides, conned Mom into getting on the big rapids ride with us, saw people get soaked, good fun. Saw a couple of the shows. There was concert for 4th of July weekend celebration, so I watched BTO play (old classic rock band).

And then it was back to work.
